1. Check your Linux Mint version by running the following commands in Terminal.
$ sudo cat /etc/issue $ sudo cat /etc/issue.net $ sudo cat /etc/lsb-release $ sudo cat /etc/os-release
2. Make sure you create a backup copy of your system sources.
$ sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.bak $ sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list.bak
3. Edit Linux Mint software list in ‘/etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list‘ file:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
Replace “petra” with “qiana” and “saucy” with “trusty” on all lines. Save and exit.
4. Start the upgrade process this way:
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade $ sudo apt-get upgrade
5. Reboot, and repeat step 1 to verify that you have Mint 17 succesfully installed.
